22 Jun Special Forum: awarded papers and feedback
The Argentinean Chapter of the Club of Rome first of all would like to express its deepest appreciation to those who have actively participated in the first session of the Special Forum, and also to those who have attended the meetings.
This time we have had three presentations, all of them bearers of ideas and thoughts that deserve to be included in research programs about more up-to-date, aware and peaceful systems.
The Jury would like to congratulate the authors of the papers for their valuable ethical, intellectual and cultural contributions. The following paragraphs include our feedback to each author.
The explosion of technology and particularly of communication technologies, makes the question of reconsidering the foundations for participation in the democratic system readily appropriate.
The representative system is a building block of the machinery that activates democratic systems today. The impossibility or the difficulty of direct mass participation in public affairs is one reason why the representative system becomes necessary for the working of democracy.
Hence, it seems reasonable to conclude that the gap between the current mode of participation in a democracy and state-of-the-art communication technology, can be bridged in the pursuit of gradually overcoming what may be considered as a “consolation vote”.
No doubt, the healthy evolvement of democracy depends to a large extent on the degree of ethical discernment within society, and on the practice of values such as respect, tolerance, honesty and rectitude, that will never lose their high qualifications.
It is difficult, if not impossible, to conceive the possibility of a progressive improvement of democracy without citizens with an expanded awareness of life. For a long time, society has developed in the context of a system that harnesses human consciousness behind intentions, desires, selfish practices and material interests. In theory, it is logical to assume that human beings with greater awareness of their rights and duties in life, will have the power to influence it in a way that is most appropriate for the major regulatory ideals of peace, general welfare and happiness.
The importance of ethics and values is critical because they permeate all fields of human action and determine the sustainability or unsustainability of a democratic system. Lack of ethics and the value of dis-value deepen selfishness, hampering the possibility of human development in its entirety.
One question would be: what aspects of our way of life should be changed, so that we feel encouraged and confident when putting into practice what is good in our nature?
Speaking in terms that are specific to computer science, if we wished to run today’s software on an old operating system, it is more than likely that the software will not be executed by the operating system.
In a system in which the prevailing basic operating rules are selfishness and material goals, it is difficult to practice fraternity or gratitude as well as achieving freedom and equality.
These high aspirations will always be shining stars highlighting the progress of the human life system. But it can also be said that they will only be fully achieved when mankind has become fully aware of the importance of stamping its actions with the seal of love as a spiritual guarantee.
And so, we wonder, is it possible to educate new generations in brotherly love, in loving life itself and everything it contains?
